this is america - bar mitzvah party

When you have kids turning 13 and are jewish you suddenly get to go to all those bar and bat mitzvahs and the parties that follow.
Those parties are more often than not extravagant affaires taking place in fine luxury hotels complete with dj's, magicians, entertainers and pizza bagels.
More affluent families can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on these things.
Even the less wealthy spend a not so insignificant sum of money on it all.
Weddings and Bar Mitzvahs are keeping the hotel and restaurant businesses afloat in many parts of the country.
Problem is of course that the kids suddenly go to 5, 10, 20 of those parties.
So it's a race to have the most fun, most extravagant, and most original bash.
In the end I wonder if the kids really enjoy it that much.
Or even appreciate it.
They often seem more interested in playing games on their iPhones than partying.
That the parents go through hell and their wallets to throw these parties is beyond doubt.
The pressure is huge.
Soon it's our turn. Oy Vey.
