good morning

The city
that never sleeps
is not
the tables are empty
no coffee brewing
no eggs sunny side up
with a whole grain toast
on a white platter

when you can't run.

In truth, in real life a much smaller guy
will have quite a bit of a problem
if attacked by a much bigger guy.
Weight matters.
Size matters.

But so does speed.
And skills.
And cool. And brains.
You don't have to be the bigger guy
to be quicker, better trained, more focused, and smarter.

That's what karate can teach you.

Karate also teaches you respect.
And it gives you the tools you'll
need when you simply can't run.

The image was shot at Blue Kife Karate in Maplewood.
An excellent dojo run and founded by
Shihan Durand Howard, 8th Degree Black Belt,
Member: U.S.A. Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

the catskills

About three hours north of New York City.
A village called the High Falls.
Deep in the mountians of the Catskills.

I would write a poem about rust
and decline
and abandoned homes
and cars too old to repair
trips not made,
clothes too old to make an impression,
music nobody listens to anymore
but I have no time
because I'm so busy
working myself into
an unavoidable state of redundancy
doing nothing that will ever be remembered
in the digital afterlife
a runaway pixel
lost in
i won't say

ivan neville, dumpstaphunk at maplewoodstock

What a day of music it was.
Maplewoodstock are two days packed with great rock'n roll and funk.
New Orleans in Jersey.
It continues today. and the weather's been brilliant.
Forecasts talked about rain and thunderstorms.
The music gods wanted differently.

play for hope

Pianos in 60 public places and parks all over New York City.
Unfortunately finished July 5.
They both looked hopeful.

a loo with a moo

Lost on the small country roads in the catskills.
Little village named High Falls.
The hippiest little restaurant outside of Nepal.
