lunch in hell's kitchen

A trendy little joint,
named after the nabe it's in.
Hell's kitchen is nowadays
more kitchen than hell however.
Gentrification has done its bit since "West Side Story"
was the real story of this place.

the tomato factory

350 pounds of organic tomatoes.
A beautiful sunny Saturday with all pots
cooking on every piece of burner we could find.
That's summer for the winter.

Esposito's

One of those places
that's probably been around for ever
and might not make it
through the inevitable gentrification
of this still rather
gritty neighborhood.
Inevitable because of all the new
apartments towers
and tourist hotels
that have sprung up around
Which seems like a contradiction.
People will have to eat.
Theoretically
more customers.
But soon a bank or a pharmacy
or some other chain store will
be paying higher rent
for the nice corner location.
That's the way it goes.

my inspiration

The view
from my current office
is not
a beautiful thing.

But it certainly reminds me
of where I can end up
if not working hard enough.
